The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is presenting an exhibition of Edward C. Moore’s extraordinary collection of decorative arts. Moore (1827–1891) was the creative force behind Tiffany & Co. in the second half of the 19th century, and during that time, amassed a personal collection of decorative arts of exceptional quality ranging from Greek and Roman glass and Japanese baskets to Venetian Murano glass and metalwork from the Islamic world. These objects were a frequent source of inspiration for Moore, a silversmith, and for the many Tiffany & Co. designers that he oversaw. The exhibition (running through October 20) features more than 180 works from Moore’s collection of over 2,000 objects, which he bequeathed to the Met, along with 70 silver objects designed at Tiffany & Co. under his direction, drawn from the Met’s holdings as well as public and private collections.
