HAPPENINGS Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940–1980 The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) 11 West 53rd Street, New York, NY On exhibition through September 22, 2024 For more informati on visit moma.org Works by designers of the domestic environment in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela between 1940 and 1980 is the subject of this fascinating and instructive new show. The show includes furniture, appliances, posters, textiles, and ceramics, as well as a selection of photographs and paintings to suggest myriad, sometimes conflicting visions of modernity and modern living along with changing ideas of national identity, taste, and style. Sources of inspiration range from local and Indigenous craft traditions and artisanal techniques to available technologies and industrial processes. Among the highlights of the exhibition are Clara Porset’s Butaque chair; Lina Bo Bardi’s Bowl chair; Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan, and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy’s B.K.F.
