from direct observation, which gives them a moody and pleasant dream-like quality. The show presents her career chronologically, divided into four sections. The first section examines her early farm life and first forays into art. Further sections explore broader social issues and include depictions of city scenes, festive celebrations, and the natural landscape. The final section of the exhibition links Reinbolt's embroideries with textile traditions in Brazil, including contemporary artists. Madalena Santos Reinbolt: A Head Full of Planets February 12 - May 25, 2025 American Folk Art Museum, New York folkartmuseum.org Valerie Rousseau, Curatorial Chair for Exhibitions at the American Folk Art Museum, describes the work as about empowerment. "Nearly 50 years after her death Reinbolt's artistic achievements are now beginning to receive the critical attention they deserve. Her work presents spaces of creative freedom as much as they are expressions of resistance, echoing her own intersecting existences." The evocative exhibition title, A Head Full ofPlanets, is taken from the artist's only interview, conducted in 1974 and 1975 by the anthropologist and art critic Lelia Coelho Frota, who hung Santos Reinbolt's work in the Brazilian pavilion at the 1978 Venice Biennale. The museum press release explains the tide refers to an expression, "Uma cabes:a cheia de planetas," that calls attention to the artist's reliance on her fertile inner world, set against a confining backdrop of class inequality and onerous labor burdens, which limited her exposure to the artistic networks of her time and prevented her from embracing a fuller artistic career." There are 42 textile works and oil paintings on view in the show, more than half of the approximately 70 known artworks by Reinbolt, making this the largest exhibition of her art ever presented. The exhibition is organized by the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), where it debuted in fall 2022. Jason T. Busch, Becky and Bob Alexander Director and CEO of the American Folk Art Museum, remarked: "For more than six decades, the American Folk Art Museum has shared the largely untold stories of folk and self-taught artists from the United States and across the globe. In presenting the first dedicated museum exhibition for Santos Reinbolt outside Brazil - and the first exhibition for a Brazilian artist at AFAM - we are rethinking how to tell the history of self taught and folk art in the 21st century."
