22 Gérôme Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of the most celebrated painters of the 19 th cen- tury. He wielded enormous influence in France both as a professor at the École des Beaux Arts and as the master of his own highly regarded studio. Gérôme’s influence extended to numerous American artists who studied with him including Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and Abott Henderson Thayer. His work is known for its rich and vivacious color and its emotionally charged subject matter, both of which were rarely matched by other Academic painters of the 19 th century. he atelier, or studio, of Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of the most popular and renowned of those associated with the professors of the École des Beaux Arts. The training provided at Gérôme’s studio was equivalent to the most rigorous of academic training.
