ALWAYS INTERESTED IN PURCHASING FINE NEEDLEWORK Forty Ferry Road   Old Saybrook, Connecticut 06475   Tel: 860.388.6809    Hubers@AntiqueSamplers.com www.AntiqueSamplers.com THE SENSE OF SMELL America or England The five senses were often depicted in girlhood embroideries. This delightful late 17th or early 18th century example features a young woman smelling a flower among a myriad of flowers and animals. It may have been worked in the Boston area because the motifs are more simplistic and less formal than typical English pieces of the period and closely relate to many found on early Boston samplers and canvaswork pictures. The original webbing that attached it to the embroidery frame still remains in place. Silk and wool on linen; 8¾" x 11½" sight.
