Located in Mountainville, New York, a hamlet in Orange County and seven miles from West Point, the farm was owned by Lawson Valentine, the artist’s childhood friend and his first and most important patron. Homer used the lush bucolic sprawling hills, populated with horses, Jersey cows, and Southdown sheep, as the backdrop for the local farmhands, milkmaids, and children he featured.
