The son of Revolutionary War hero Jack Jouett, after studying under Stuart, Matthew returned to Lexington, Kentucky, becoming the Commonwealth’s most beloved portrait painter. The youthful Clay was already a star on the national stage when this work was painted during his second term as Speaker of the House, having already served as a United States Senator and negotiating the Treaty of Ghent.
