14th Anniversary 20 www.antiquesandfineart.com NOTEWORTH Y S A L E S Deacon Robert Peckham (1785–1877) Portrait of Sally Puffer Sanderson (1829–1830), circa 1830 Oil on canvas, 37⅞ x 28⅞ inches Original gilded frame Courtesy Joan Brownstein, Newbury, Mass. Peckham painted this sweet portrait of Sally Sanderson in Westminster, Massachusetts, during the time of his peak activity from the 1830s to the 1840s. The young girl is attired in a patterned blue dress and holds a rose. Behind her, her wheeled basket-like carriage is painted a vivid yellow with green trim, its blanket red and green plaid, and she holds a floral patterned red cloth. The polished brass andirons that protrude from the fireplace, and architectural elements in the setting, are clearly portrayed. Such realistic attention to detail is a characteristic for which the artist is known, and a reason his works are so highly regarded, particularly considering he had no extended formal training, apparently studying briefly with Ethan Allen Greenwood (1779–1856) at the beginning of his career in 1809. The painting descended in the family. A portrait of her mother was also painted by the artist. Chinese Carved Jade Panel 6 x 8 inches Sold at Woodbury Auctions Annual Fall Fine Estates Auction September 29, 2013, for $392,000 Courtesy Woodbury Auction This panel, with a carved mountain landscape scene on one side and a scene of boaters on a lake on the other, was discovered in the drawer of a chest sold at one of the firm’s Opportunity Auctions in August. Tremendous interest from a number of Chinese and other international phone bidders, multiple internet bidders, and three bidders in the room, resulted in stiff competition, building for three weeks prior to the sale. The opening bid started at $90,000 and within a few minutes the lot was knocked down to a bidder in the room, acting as an agent for a buyer in China.
