AFA Summer 2020
Summer 12 www.afamag.com | w ww.incollect.com W e are experiencing a very stressful point in our collective history and in our personal lives. All of us at Antiques & Fine Art magazine and Incollect hope you stay safe and healthy while navigating these challenging personal and economic times. Tragically, there are, and will continue to be, heartaches associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, Dr. John Driscoll, of Driscoll Babcock Galleries in New York, passed away as a result of complications from the virus. John was a scholar, mentor, and friend to many, and he left this world far too early; please turn to page 110 for Glenn Adamson’s touching tribute to him. Our work and social circles have dramatically shrunk, and gatherings have come to a temporary halt. These include the art and antiques shows and auctions that are a mainstay for the industry, where dealers, auctioneers, and collectors engage with one another in camaraderie and commerce. While we are grateful to have online options, having direct access to collections and the expertise of dealers at shows and auctioneers at sales is an entirely unique and wonderful experience, and we look forward to their return. As of our press date, a number of shows have been cancelled into or through June and others into July, financially affecting the exhibiting dealers, gallery owners, and show managers. The art and antiques industry is a major contributor to the economy at large, vital to cultural institutions, important to collectors, and critical to livelihoods. We hope you will reach out to the advertisers in this issue, as well as to other dealers and auctioneers you know, and support their businesses. In this edition you will find articles on a wide variety of topics, with accompanying visuals of exotic birds, sea creatures, Southwestern art, dramatic decorative screens, stories on wallpaper, royalty, and stunning interiors. We hope that you will be comforted and enlightened by the timeless beauty and information within these pages. As you continue to seek a semblance of “normal” in each day, and to look for better days ahead, I hope you will find ways to express your creativity and to continue to enjoy beautiful things. Thank you for supporting the industry. Be healthy and safe, Johanna johanna@antiquesandfineart.com Photography by Ellen McDermott LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Established 1976 Clive Devenish Antiques P.O.
